McKinney is a city in and the county seat of Collin County, Texas, and the second in population to Plano. As of the 2010 census, the city's population was 131,117. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, and is located about 37 miles north of Dallas. Both the city and the county were named for Collin McKinney, signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, and a congressman for the Red River district of the Republic of Texas. In 1849, William Davis, who owned 3,000 acres where McKinney now stands, donated 120 acres for the townsite. Ten years later, McKinney incorporated.McKinney served as the county's main commercial hub for many years. The county seat offered conveniences such as banks, churches, schools, newspapers and an Opera House. Farmers had access to cotton gins, a cotton press as well as mills for their flour and corn. A new courthouse was completed in 1875 and at the time was the tallest building in Texas north of San Antonio. Money Magazine ranked McKinney as the #1 Best Place to Live in America! McKinney has been featured in the top 5 on the list since 2010.
